Our annual Vacation Bible School began last night with a bang. We had sloppy Joes(one of my favorite comfort foods) for dinner, registered a bunch of new kids and met some very nice families. My job this VBS is information and leader encouragement. That means I compose a daily newsletter and a small gift to give all of the VBS workers each night. Last night I handed out a VBS Survival Kit. It contained matches, seeds, bath salts, water, etc. with each item given a corresponding encouraging message and scripture. Oh, and chocolate, of course! The gifts were warmly received and appreciated. On the way home last night, after a day in the trenches, it occurred to me there might have been a more useful survival kit I could have compiled. Here is a list for my new, improved, version of the
Vacation Bible School Survival Kit
Pony Holder - you'll need it when the sweat starts rolling.
Closed-toe shoes - unless you like the feeling of little sneakers crunching your baby toe.
Knee Pads - Those kids love it when you talk to them at their eye level...and there are a BUNCH of little ones to talk to at VBS!
Your own personal stash of Tape, Stapler, Scissors, and a Sharpie. During VBS, these items are precious commodities.
Sugar or Caffeine. You're choice. You'll need it.
Make up remover wipes. Better yet, just wash all makeup off before you get there.
Tissues - for wiping noses and drying sweat....and for dabbing the tears that well up when you become overwhelmed by the love poured out all over you when you spend time with these precious little people!

If you have never helped in a VBS event, I recommend it highly. It is a great way to serve as missionaries in your own hometown!
