I stood in the checkout line behind a lovely woman and her two adorable kids last night. Her preschooler son was wearing a black cowboy hat and reminded me of my own boy when he was that age. Her baby was smiling and cooing in the infant seat placed in the cart. Momma was cooing back at her baby and heaping blessings on her boy for being such a good helper while he put groceries on the conveyor belt, readying them for checkout. As he completed his job, she began hers. She placed her W.I.C. coupons next to the appropriate items, focusing on her task and her kids, expertly avoiding eye contact with anyone else.
I am grateful we live in a country that reaches out to those in need, flawed as the process may be. I wish there was a way to help "the least of these" and preserve their dignity at the same time.
